“Ubik” by Philip K. Dick

Far in the future (1992, to be precise!), death does not always mean ceasing to exist.  Facilities exist that can put the recently deceased into a “half-life” state, where mental activity continues and limited contact with the outside world is possible.

Oh yeah, and there are psychics.  And anti-psychics.  And everything is coin-operated (one senses a possibly resentment Dick held about being continually nickeled-and-dimed).

Interesting story; short read.  One of those “what the heck is going on?” type books.  Kind of reminded me of the movie “Inception” – you’re never quite sure what is real.  Are you in the actual world or just in someone’s imagination?
